Pensacola, Florida, is a Golfer’s Nirvana

Pensacola is a delightful town for many reasons. It has a great waterfront, an impressive number of first-class courses, and an astounding array of top-tier restaurants. But perhaps the most enticing reason to visit this western tip of Florida’s panhandle is that you can stay for a week, play 36 holes each day, and not spend more than $1,000. That makes it a frugal golfer’s Nirvana.

The city has 10 outstanding golf courses within the immediate area, with more stretching north and south along the coastline. These terrific courses provide a wonderful challenge for golfers of all skill levels, and they are well-groomed with luscious fairways and greens. The staff at these outstanding courses can offer you tips and tricks for improving your game, too.

A good place to start is with the Pensacola Country Club, a classic private club built in 1902 with a gorgeous view of the bay. The course was rebuilt by Jerry Pate in 2004 following Hurricane Ivan, and it is one of the best in the region.

Another fine public course in the area is A. C. Read, a military-themed course that was established in 2003. The course is challenging for even the best players, but it’s also very friendly and welcoming to beginners.

The city is also home to several terrific private courses that are worth playing if you can secure a tee time. The city’s oldest is the Pensacola Country Club, and it’s a gorgeous layout with some fantastic holes. The pristine condition of the fairways and greens is a big draw, as are the terrific practice facilities.

Scenic Hills Country Club is a great local course that has hosted the U.S. Women’s Open. It has a long history, and the Chick Adams design is a challenge with plenty of water coming into play and tough, fast greens.

Another private club worth playing is Lost Key, a picturesque course located between downtown and the beachfront on Perdido Key. This course is a bit quirky in that it uses Sea Dwarf Paspalum grass, and its signature feature is the onsite restaurant that offers guests cottages to stay in between rounds.
